Any good Sysadmin will tell you, developers suck. Any good developer will tell you, Sysadmins suck. You’d think I’d have a pretty low self esteem by now. The thing is, that in order to be a competent systems administrator, you need to know what the system you’re administrating is doing. I’m also lazy. I heard this the other day from an employee of a company I admire: “If you’re doing it manually more than once, you’re doing it wrong”. I really do want to replace myself with some BASH scripts. When I need more than Bash, I’ll do PHP, Perl, Python and Ruby (preferably not Rails). Once again, that’s in order of preference, and competence.
